How "IVRI" Became "Hebrew"
The Israelites wrote their name in their language with the letters עברי. The letters I V R I represent עברי in English.
In the original tongue used to write the Bible, the word the letters represent is pronounced Erverh.
A direct translation of the name of the ancient Israelites will read IVRI (pronounced Erverh). However, in time, this true name of the Israelites took a backseat. What replaced the name of the Israelites is a great departure from the truth.
To make matters worse, the name Hebrew comes from a double translation from the original name.
Let me explain what I mean by all of that.
The name ‘Hebrew,’ is the English translation of the name pronounced Erverh from Latin. That means the first translation of the name of the Israelites into Latin was the first step. This first step dropped and lost the proper pronunciation of Erverh. With the proper pronunciation lost in translation, in came the second step, which is the new Latin name’s translation into what we have now.
The confusion came about this way. From the time of the Abraham until the time of Jesus Christ, the world knew the Israelites as עברי (Erverh).
In time, during the time of Christ, two thousand years ago, the Roman Empire ruled (what is called) the Middle East. Judea, the home of the Israelites, became a province of the Roman Empire. The national language of the Roman Empire was Latin; therefore, all the literature people wrote and read was in Latin. Available Books not originally written in Latin were all translated into it. Included in these translations were the Hebrew Scriptures. עברי (Erverh), translated into Latin became, Hebraicus. However, as you can see yourself, how you pronounce Hebraicus is nowhere near pronunciation of Erverh.
For the next thousand years, Latin was the dominant language in Christendom and the Latin translation of the Bible was the de-facto book.
The reformation in Europe, led by Martin Luther changed the status quo. Before then, only the small-educated minority that read Latin knew of what was in the scriptures. After the reformation, translation of the Bible began in other European languages including English. This opened up an unprecedented access of Biblical information to anyone who could read his or her local language.
However, there was a problem. All these translations were taken from the Latin version instead of the original language. Therefore, instead of using the original name IVRI (Erverh), the translated Latin name Hebraicus carried into the European languages, which included English. The name “Hebrew,” is the result of translating the Latin “Hebraicus,” into English.
Thus, the name, “Hebrew” is the result of a double translation of the original name עברי, (Erverh). Had the translation been from the original texts with the name, עברי, you’d never have heard the name Hebrew.
Instead, the proper name Erverh is what people will know as the name of the Israelites.
So there you have it! The proper pronunciation in the native language of the ancient Israelites’ designation, commonly known, as “Hebrew” in English is “IVRI” pronounced Erh-Verh. Because most modern Bibles are direct translations or carbon copies of the Latin translation, the result is all modern Bibles carry the name Hebrew. Derived from the Latin name Hebraicus. Without the Latin name “Hebraicus,” a direct translation from the original Dead Sea scrolls would read “Erverh,” instead of Hebrew.
Let me repeat. The name “Hebrew,” is the English translation from the original ancient texts of the name עברי (IVRI) pronounced Erh-Verh.
Thus, without beating about the bush, the Erverh people of West Africa, and the enslaved Africans, are none other than the ancient Israelites. The people in the area formerly known as the Slave Coast in West Africa are the Êυê (Erverh) aka the Hebrews.
They migrated to Africa 3000 years ago when the Babylonians destroyed their Kingdom along with ancient Egypt. Since then Africa has been their home.
During the time of the Trans Atlantic Slave trade, due to the ravages of war, millions of Erverh prisoners of war were transported as slaves to North and South America. Thus, their descendants in these countries are also the Êυê (Erverh) aka the Hebrews.
These include the freed enslaved warriors relocated in Sierra Leone and Liberia. They are all Erverh.
The enslaved Africans in the interior of West Africa as well as down in the Slave Coast were the same people called Êυê or Êυêo (pronounced Erverh or Erverh-O).
Currently, because there are no letters in the English alphabet to represent the ‘vav’ sound in the name Erverh or Erverh-O, in West Africa , people from this ethnic group write their name as Eυe. Non-Eυe people on the other hand, write the name as Ewe. Nevertheless, Ewe is completely wrong.
Because first, it is the name for a female sheep and second, Ewe does not sound anywhere near, not even close to the proper pronunciation of the people’s name.
The name is actually pronounced Êυêo (pronounced Erverh-oh). Eyeo or Êυêo is the name in the plural. In the singular it is Êυê.
The Êυêo occupy four countries in West Africa. Namely: Eastern Ghana, Togo, Republic of Benin and Western Nigeria.
Given the significance and the fact this name is the real name or identity of millions of people in Africa and the Americas, it is prudent you learn its pronunciation. Êυê is pronounced “Erh-verh” or Eyverh.” Êυêo is pronounced “Erh-verh-O” or Eyverh-O. Don’t worry if you are struggling with the pronunciation.

To make this clearer, use your internet browser and google "Abraham was IVRI". Then google the words "Hebraicus Latin". They will both give you results around Hebrew or Jew.

**There is a still conversation among scholars of the original paleo-Hebrew script of the Bible concerning whether there was a "v" or "vav" sound or a "w" sound.
Rabbi Basil Amaah, a Hebrew from Ghana and a descendant of Gad, also concludes in the video below that sound was somewhere in between the two as the English language has no letter to truly represent the original Hebrew sound of the letter.
So Eve is Hebrew, and according to Mawuli from his book, since the Europeans couldn't get the pronunciation of the name Erverh correct, and called them Ewe, the Ewe people of Ghana, Togo and Benin of west Africa, would also be Êυê or Hebrew.
Also, as I'm always curious of what Wikipedia says about these historically rich findings...
Interestingly when you look up the Ewe people they say under the "History" tab that
"The ancient history of the Ewe people is not recorded"
But then all the way down towards the bottom, under the "Language: Evegbe" tab they slide in that:
"Ewe, also written Evhe, or Eʋe... "
